Beth and Ben each grew up as TCKs with missionary parents, Beth in Zambia and Ben in Taiwan. Beth is a general surgeon with a subspecialty in trauma and critical care. Ben is a psychotherapist. They have 3 children: Elias, Simon, and Adele. They live in Lilongwe, Malawi.
For much of her life, Beth has had the vision of using her unique training and experience to bring emergency surgery and critical care to the African context where she grew up. She’s fulfilling that calling as general surgery faculty at Nkhoma Mission Hospital outside Lilongwe, where she and colleagues run a general surgery residency program under the Pan African Academy of Christian Surgeons (PAACS). Beth is also intimately involved in the development of Nkhoma’s first intensive care unit, which allows the hospital to operate on and treat much more complicated patients than in times past. She also works part time in the city of Lilongwe, raising the profile of Nkhoma surgical department and bringing patients from the city for surgery. Training the next generation of surgeons for Africa is deeply fulfilling and desperately needed.
Ben wears even more hats: volunteering as a psychotherapist for our local church, keeping up his US based practice very part time and with a 10 hour time difference, hauling 3 kids to school and everywhere else (one of whom has some significant special needs), supporting the relatively new Malawi Association of Counselling, and cooking a weekly feast for the church small group that meets in our home.
